The exam is conducted in two sessions on the same day. It comprises 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), divided equally into two parts of 150 questions each. Exam Day Guidelines
Here are the guidelines released by NBEMS for the day of the FMGE exam date 2026.
Candidates are required to report at the ‘Reporting Counter’ 30 minutes before the test. Please refer to your admit cards for test times.
On exam day, candidates will need to present their admit card and original ID proof at the check-in desk. An exam official will scan the admit card’s barcode and immediately assign their specific computer lab and seat number.
Candidates are required to bring their admit card and a valid government-issued proof of identity. It can be an Aadhaar card, a PAN card, a Passport, a Driving license, or a Voter ID.
Candidates will not be allowed to take anything else beyond the security checkpoint in the examination premises under any circumstances.
The candidates will be frisked at the entry to the test center premises. Candidates are requested to comply with the security measures at the exam venue.
Finger Biometrics and a photograph of the candidates will be captured at the time of registration at the test venue in the computer-based test.
Face ID shall be verified at the time of collection of the FMGE Pass Certificate, against the photographs captured on the exam day and the ones uploaded in the application form. It is crucial to upload your most recent photograph in the application to avoid a mismatch during the verification process.
Any suspicious or disruptive behavior on the part of the candidate may lead to cancellation of their candidature.
How to apply for a License after clearing the FMGE exam?
After successful completion of FMGE, you are eligible to apply for the Medical Council of India (MCI) registration to practice in India. This registration is now handled by the National Medical Council (NMC). Here is everything you need to know about the National and State registration process.
After receiving your FMGE pass certificate, you can apply online for the MCI registration. This certificate is only valid for 5 years, so you must apply for your MCI and State Medical Council registrations before its expiration.
You would require documents like your FMGE certification, Original Medical Degree, Transcripts from your college/university, Internship completion certificate, no-objection certification from the hospital, Passport and visa copies, Medical fitness certificate, Proof of Indian citizenship, character certificate from the university, and recent passport-size photographs.

The FMGE Internship also known as Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI)is a mandatory, one-year clinical training program that Foreign Medical Graduates must complete in India after passing the FMGE screening test. Managed under the CRMI Regulations set by the National Medical Commission, this internship is designed to ensure that graduates who studied in foreign medical universities gain adequate, hands-on clinical exposure within the Indian healthcare framework.
During this 12-month period, the trainees undergo an internship at various clinical departments. An intern is posted in specialties including General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and Community Medicine. This rotational structure guarantees that FMGs develop the practical competencies, diagnostic skills, and patient communication abilities required to treat patients safely.
Latest NMC Guidelines for FMGE Internship
The NMC frequently updates its rules to solve the practical problems FMGs face. Based on the latest UGMEB notices from March and June 2026, here are the most important rules you need to know about the FMGE Internship:
1. More Time to Finish
FMGs used to rush to find internship spots before their test scores expired. Because hospital seats are limited, the NMC has extended the deadline to complete internships at recognized non-teaching hospitals to May 2028 (recently updated from the previous May 2026 deadline). This gives you much more time to secure a seat without worrying about your FMGE score lapsing.
2. Rules for Online Classes (Study Compensation)
If you studied online due to COVID-19 or war, the NMC requires you to replace that time with hands-on, physical training.
If you didn’t do extra physical training abroad: You must complete an extra 1 to 2 years of “clerkship” training in India before starting your standard 1-year internship.
If you already made it up: If you have an official Compensation Certificate and transcripts proving you completed the physical training later at your foreign university, you are excused from the extra time in India. State councils will strictly verify these documents.
3. Reserved Seats
To fix the severe shortage of internship spots, the NMC has reserved specific seats just for FMGs for the 2026–2027 academic year:

Approved Hospitals List & Guidelines
To ensure quality training, FMGs cannot intern at just any local clinic or unverified hospital. You must complete your FMGE Internship at an NMC-recognized institution. Doing an internship at an unlisted or unapproved hospital will result in the NMC rejecting your training entirely, forcing you to repeat the year.
While the specific, finalized hospital-by-hospital matrix for 2026 is distributed internally to State Medical Councils for state counseling, the approved training centers generally fall into the following established categories:
Government Medical Colleges: The most preferred option. These institutions offer massive patient footfall and excellent clinical exposure across all required specialties.
Private Medical Colleges: Approved by the NMC to take FMGs against their mandated 7.5% quota, provided they have the necessary infrastructure.
Military & Railway Hospitals: Select Armed Forces and Railway hospitals across the country are MCI/NMC approved for CRMI training.
Recognized Non-Teaching Hospitals: Large district and state hospitals that have the infrastructure to support all mandatory clinical rotations. Notable examples include Hindu Rao Hospital in Delhi, Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad, and SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.

Step-by-Step Application Process
Securing an FMGE Internship requires patience and close coordination with state authorities. Because the process is entirely decentralized, you must navigate the rules of the specific state where you wish to practice. Here is the standard procedure you need to follow:
Step 1: Obtain Provisional Registration
Once you pass the FMGE, apply immediately to your desired State Medical Council for a Provisional Registration Certificate. This certificate is absolute proof that you are legally authorized to interact with and treat patients as a trainee in India.
Step 2: Track State Counselling Notifications
Internship seats are not distributed directly by hospitals. The State Medical Councils, in consultation with the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), release notifications for seat matrix availability and counseling dates. Step 3: Document Verification
